BALAPITIYA

A picturesque village with golden soft beaches, with remnants of ancient history in the form of temples, a large interior expanse of river and islands and cinnamon plantations, Balapitiya is traditionally a fishing village, away from the main stream tourist resorts. Balapitiya is believed to be the battle field where commander Devapathiraja combated the South Indian invader, Kalinga Magha. Hence, the region was named Balapitiya, meaning ‘Battlefield’. A 45 min drive south from Colombo, either along the costal road or by train it is only a short drive away from Bentota one of Sri Lanka's major beach resorts. Ambalangoda, famous for its mask carving, Hikkaduwa a surfers’ paradise and the historical city of Galle are within easy reach.
